About the Song

“Nasonville Valley” takes the listener on a musical ride over the railroad itself.

Our locomotive is San Pio, the Nasonville Valley’s 2-8-0 Consolidation. From the station, she carries us through the Shirley Covered Bridge and begins the climb into the valley. Along the way we cross Gennaro Trestle, wind around Blueberry Pass, pass the old log cabin, cross the great 220-foot trestle, enter the tunnels, cross Pascoag Trestle, and continue toward the heights of the Mountain Division.

These aren’t imaginary places. They are part of the Nasonville Valley Railroad, built over the years by the hands of family and friends.

The song is an invitation to come along for the ride—to smell the coal smoke, hear San Pio’s whistle through the trees, and experience that wonderful part of live steam that allows us, if only for a little while, to become children again.

Nasonville Valley

Verse 1

All aboard the Nasonville Valley Railroad!
Now departing from the station down below.
Old San Pio leads the way,
A Consolidation proud today,
As she calls us on a journey through the pines.
The fire glows and steam begins to rise,
Smoke drifts softly toward the summer skies.
A 2-8-0 strong and true,
Built for dreams and mountain views,
As her drivers grip the rails and start to climb.

Verse 2

Leaving station grounds behind us,
Through the Shirley Covered Bridge we glide away.
Up a gentle climbing grade,
Past the valley God has made,
To the Gennaro Trestle stretching on ahead.
Ninety-two feet long and standing strong,
It carries us above the ground below.
Through the maples and the pines,
Past the fields and mountain signs,
As San Pio gives a cheerful whistle blow.

Verse 3

Around Blueberry Pass we’re winding,
Through the forest on the mountainside we go.
Past the old log cabin there,
Breathing cool and country air,
While the valley spreads beneath us far below.
Then ahead a mighty sight,
Spanning through the trees in morning light,
The great two-hundred-twenty-foot trestle stands,
A ribbon built by loving hands,
Carrying us onward toward the Mountain Division heights.

Bridge

Through the tunnel darkness echoes,
Then the daylight greets our eyes.
Across the Pascoag Trestle,
Toward the mountain we arise.
Round the curves and through the pines,
To the summit we ascend.
Then another tunnel leads us,
As the Mountain Division bends.

Final Chorus

Ride the Nasonville Valley Railroad,
Where dreams become reality once more.
Led by San Pio’s song,
As she proudly rolls along,
Through the tunnels, over trestles, evermore.
Ride the Nasonville Valley Railroad,
Hear the whistle singing through the trees.
For a little while we’re children,
Filled with wonder once again,
On the railroad of our memories.
