About the Song

Every train needs something to bring up the markers, and what better way to end our journey than with a little red caboose?

“Little Red Caboose” is a lighthearted celebration of one of the most beloved sights on any railroad. On the Nasonville Valley, she’s a four-wheel bobber, rocking and swaying along behind the train as the locomotives carry her around the curves, through the tunnels, and across the trestles.

There’s something about a caboose that brings out the child in almost everyone. Children wave as it passes, and adults remember a time when the caboose was a familiar sight at the end of a freight train.

Our album began at Nasonville Station with the conductor calling everyone aboard. Now, after traveling the railroad together, the little red caboose comes around the bend and brings our regular journey to its close.

But on a railroad, there’s always another train coming.

We’ll see you down the line!

Little Red Caboose

Verse 1

There’s a little red caboose
On the Nasonville Valley line,
Painted bright as a summer rose,
Lord, she shines so fine.
She waits until the train rolls out,
Then smiles and falls in line,
Bringing up the rear with pride,
Right on time.

Chorus

Oh, little red caboose,
Rollin’ easy, swayin’ loose.
Round the curves and down the grade,
Never once afraid.
Through the tunnels, over trestles,
With a whistle’s sweet excuse,
Everybody loves to wave
At that little red caboose.

Verse 2

She’s a four-wheel bobber,
Dancin’ on the rails,
Rockin’ to the rhythm
Of the locomotive’s tale.
Clickety-clack, she’s singin’ back,
To every puff of steam,
Following the Queen of Peace
Like a happy dream.

Bridge

Sunlight on her cupola,
Moonlight on her roof,
She has seen a thousand journeys,
That’s the honest truth.
Every child is smiling,
Every grown-up feels like two,
When that little caboose comes rolling into view.

Final Chorus

Oh, little red caboose,
Rollin’ easy, swayin’ loose.
Through the valley, proud and true,
With a faithful heart so true.
Round the bend she’s coming,
Bringing every ride to close,
God bless the Nasonville Valley…
And that little red caboose.

(Spoken over the final trumpet):

“Now that’s the way to end a train ride… all aboard, we’ll see you down the line!”
